I was having a discussion with a friend and he said that there are two basic beliefs about money:

Money makes the world go round.

or..

Money is the root of all evil.

What do you think? (feel free to explain your logic).

perfect example, heres a clip outta the local news:

A XXX man is accused of threatening another man with a hammer.

Police in the city of XXX arrested Joel Tebay, last Tuesday, after an incident outside the Dollar General Store on Main Street.

Apparently, Tebay and the victim got into an argument about some change that fell on the floor inside the store and Tebay allegedly produced a hammer he had hidden and threatened to kill the victim after both were outside.

seeing as, if civilizations didnt use currency and money. every 1 would just help eachother out with resources and stuff, and scientifically advance further and quicker..

I have issues with the obscene amount of capital modern corporations have access to.

Money can and will buy anything you want it to, politicians and government officials included.

Wiki the Monsanto Corporation and see how many former employees now have high-level government positions.

I don't think a company having a lot of capital is directly related to governemnt corruption. It might be, that certain economic actors, if they become too powerful, might cause major structural problems (allowing for corporate interests to be dominant in the public sector because of conflicts of interest and outright illegal practices only as result of their sheer size), but I'm not sure that this alone is the problem.

For various reasons, there will be certain occassions when it will be "natural" (economically sensible) for certain economic actors to becomoe very big (utilities for instance, and perhaps even with agriculture because of economies of scale, but after seeing Food, Inc. I think otherwise). Hence, while I might agree that on certain occassions, companies becoming too big might be against the common interest of society (disproportionate market control and such of certain actors can put a significant damper on the goal of a "perfect market"), some companies should for various reasons, get very big (lots of capital accumulated into a single company).

Underlying issues regarding corruption and such, need to be solved with a more effective public sector, not regulating private sector to have mandated limits on how much capital any given company should be given (a task I would think rather unfit to be undertaken by our corrupt public sectore nonetheless). Instead a more enhanced civil society, that is more demanding and better informed, should do the trick. Perhaps even with democratic reforms in our political institutions to take us closer to "direct democracy".

Many seem more concerned with the acqusition of money itself rather than the acquisition of those which they might use money as a medium to obtain. In other words, money has created a pursuit for itself that exceeds that which it can be used towards.

money gives us the illusion of security. like someone said above me, everyone wants to feel secure. and if you have money, you can buy things that help you feel safe and comfortable. money isn't real though. the only reason currency has any value is because weve collectively agreed to exchange it amongst ourselves.
